Personal Jesus (Single Release)
August 29th, 1989

Depeche Mode released "Personal Jesus" on August 29th, 1989. The first single from the album "Violator", "Personal Jesus" was released barely a year after the legendary "Concert For The Masses" show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena (as seen in the film "101").

Produced by Depeche Mode and Flood, and mixed by Francois Kevorkian, "Personal Jesus" went on to become one of the biggest selling singles in the history of the band. The song has been covered by artists ranging from Johnny Cash to Marilyn Manson, and was re-released in 2011 as part of the "Remixes 81-11" compilation.

Using footage from the music video, Violator EPK and 86>98 interview films (all taken from the "86>98+" video compilation), and a Spanish TV performances (thanks to our friends at the DM TV Archives), here is a look back at "Personal Jesus".

The Wherehouse In-Store
March 20th, 1990

To promote the release of "Violator" in the United States, Sire/Reprise and KROQ-FM organized a record signing at The Wherehouse record store at 3rd and La Cienega in Los Angeles.

Fans lined up for days for the opportunity to meet the band. By the time that the event started at 9pm, it was estimated that well over 10,000 fans had crowded the streets of Los Angeles, and surrounded the record store.

Even though the event lasted a little more than an hour (due to the police shutting it down), it left an impression. If people didn't know who Depeche Mode were after they sold out the Rose Bowl, they knew now.

Using footage from multiple TV clips and interview clips (mostly from my VHS collection, but also including some clips from our friends at the DM TV Archives), here is a look back at "The Wherehouse In-Store".
