DESCRIPTION:
One of the perks I get working for Depeche Mode is shooting their concerts. The goal is usable content for social media and their website.

As I was using a Canon 5D MkII during this time period, the video I shot looked great...when I could keep focus. The flaw of the firmware at the time was that when shooting video, if you wanted to take a picture, it would pause the video for 1-2 seconds. This makes for great photos, but really screws up the video.

On my rig, not only did I have the Canon camera, but I had a portable digital recorder. These things are great in noisy environments. I can literally stand in front of a stack of speakers, and as long as I set the record level low enough, the sound is never distorted. I can't say the same for the audio the Canon recorded.

So, this is video I couldn't really use on the band's official site (the pauses within the video). I did use the still image. That image is still one of my favo(u)rite shots. I managed to get into the seats behind the stage, and the huge backdrop. I found a very small opening in the backdrop, and spent half of the night up there, taking photos from an angle you almost never see. The only flaw of the night came when I tried to take a quick iPhone picture during a Martin acoustic song...and my flash went off. Jez (Martin's guitar tech) quickly spotted me, and gave me a stern finger wave...and a smile. :)

Rotting away on a memory card for 12 years, I hope you enjoy the clip, and bear with the watermark. I'm tired of people repurposing my content, and either trying to remove the watermarks, or - more rudely - typing something like "Courtesy of Daniel Barassi" on the stolen video. You sure as hell didn't ask my permission, and I never would have said "yes". Be original! Don't just steal something wholesale. At least remix it (like I do with mashups).
